Russ Mullen toured the United States and Canada with various bands. He has also performed several times in Las Vegas. Russ has recorded several CDs with numerous artists including Wild Seed Wild Flower with Dion Ferris produced by Randy Jackson. This CD was number 4 on the Billboard top 40 charts. He is the leader of Russ Mullen and the Jazz Associates and has performed all over the Southern California area including several concerts at Hollywood & Highland, the Kodak Theater, Jazz on the Lawn in Santa Monica, and the Santa Monica 4th of July Parade. He recorded 2 CDs of his own compositions with the Jazz Associates, both CDs got worldwide airplay and spent several weeks on the JazzWeek top 50 jazz charts. He is currently a free-lance musician performing with several bands in LA, Orange, and Ventura Counties. Russ was honored by the Los Angeles City Council for performing with an all star band led by Buddy Collette in a series of concerts around the Los Angeles area to commemorate Duke Ellington’s 100th birthday. Russ was the jazz band director at John Adams Middle School in Santa Monica for 18 years. He was the jazz band director at SMASH for 6 years until the pandemic shut down. Russ taught a jazz master class at Pacific Blue music camp for several years. He started Summer Jazz (a summertime jazz workshop) and taught it for several years at John Adams Middle School and Lincoln Middle School in Santa Monica. Russ taught a summer jazz band class at Summer Adventure in Santa Monica. He was Buddy Collette’s teaching assistant and substitute teacher at Loyola Marymount University, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal State Long Beach. Russ helped start Jazz America with Buddy Collette and Richard Simon and helped teach jazz with the program. He has been honored several times by the Los Angeles City Council for teaching jazz in an after-school program started by Jackie Goldberg and Buddy Collette Russ has been a private music teacher on all brass instruments for over 30 years.
